Programmable Logic Controller, or PLC, is what controls a good deal of the heavy machinery that makes much of the industrial world go round and acts as a sort of mini-computer with its own operating system. Because it is so widely used there is high demand for learning the system. Perhaps you are in an occupation where learning some PLC programming through some training would pay off in a big way for you. If so, then what are your PLC training options?

Just as with many other types of training, with PLC, you have a variety of options in which you can pick from. How you prefer to learn will highly dictate the best training method for you. Here are some training options for learning PLC:

• Software Training: This is one of the most popular methods of PLC training. Most PLC training software programs are a learn by doing method to learn PLC. This type of PLC training usually starts with a video tutorial and is then followed with you performing for yourself what you just learned. This type of training allows you to learn from the comfort of your own home and at your own pace as well.
• Online Training: Online training for PLC programming works much the same as the software training only there is no software to use. Some online PLC training courses are even free to use, but remember that sometimes free is not always the best route to take. This isn’t to say that the freebie lessons are bad, but you may want to use them as more of a supplemental training tool that you can do from home when you have spare time.
• Simulation Training: Again this works much the same way where you see a tutorial and then do what you learned. The main difference in simulation training is that you usually do it in a ‘classroom’ setting. This type of PLC training is ideal for you if you are the type of person who learns better in a classroom setting versus the privacy of your own home or on your own computer.
• Course Training: As it sounds, this has you in more of a classroom setting as well. With course trading you typically cover one area of training at a time and there is the opportunity to then ask questions of those who are instructing and also allows you ample opportunity to take notes that you can refer back to at a later time.

Learning PLC programming could be the best thing for you to do in regards to your career. If you take both the time and the initiative to learn the system then you may prove to your higher-ups that you are invaluable to have and that you represent a huge plus to the company. Because PLC programming is an ever evolving endeavor, those who stay up to date and are attuned to the inner workings of the programming will stand the best chance of advancing. Why not make that your story?
